Tell Grant Robertson to fully fund sexual violence prevention in Budget 2019
Here are some talking points you can use to help write your email:
New Zealand has some of the worst rates of domestic and sexual violence in the OECD. We urgently need government action to turn this around.
Current funding does not match need. The number of people reaching out for help has increased by 88% since 2013, but funding has not increased in line with this demand.
In 2015 the United Nations expressed serious concern at “the lack of proper funding for specialist sexual violence support services that reflect the diversity in [New Zealand] communities.” Budget 2019 is the time to change this.
Every person in Aotearoa New Zealand, from every community and background, should have access to domestic and sexual violence support and healing services when and where they need it.
I would like to see the government invest in universal, best-practice, culture and age appropriate consent education for all children and young people.
In Budget 2019, I would love to see a significant increase in sexual violence prevention, support and education. Services should be fully funded and there should be enough resourcing for nationwide coverage of Kaupapa Māori and other culturally-appropriate, accessible and specialist sexual violence support services.
I would like to see the government invest in public awareness and behaviour change programmes to promote understanding and prevention of violence.
I think we need well-funded services for self-referral by people who are at risk of causing harm and those who have caused harm and want to change.
Affected by sexual harm? It's not your fault.
